Parent Workshops
Wise Readers to Leaders values parents and families as the experts of their children’s lives and as our most vital partners. We work to educate, empower, and mobilize our scholars’ parents and guardians as advocates and participants in their children’s cognitive and non-cognitive development. Throughout the summer and academic year programming, the WRTL staff works to bring in community guest speakers and host bonding workshops as resources for the 250+ families we serve.
By extending the learning of our scholars from our campuses and into their homes, we strengthen the gains that scholars make in our program. By increasing family involvement, we promote effective communication, connect families to vital resources, and support families in being active in their children’s education.
Recent parent workshops and resources include:
- Health & Nutrition with a professional chef doing an interactive dinner demo
- Immigration Policy with a lawyer and advocate for immigrant rights explaining recent policy changes under the Trump administration and conducting hands-on emergency document preparation with families
- STEM-oriented activities led by staff where parents and children came together to participate in friendly competitions
- Consultation around changes to DACA with Loyola Law School representative
